Graduate Certificate in Medical Microbiology

The Graduate Certificate in Medical Microbiology is a 12-credit hour, post-baccalaureate certificate program administered by the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Program.

Graduate Certificate in Medical Microbiology students complete 150 clinical contact hours in a medical microbiology laboratory in MLS 516. Graduate certificate students who currently work in a medical laboratory may be able to be exempted from a portion of the required clinical contact hours.

Students must have at least one year of experience working in a medical laboratory to be eligible to request an exemption from a portion of the clinical contact hour requirement. Requests for exempted clinical contact hours will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and will require official verification of employment and clinical competence by a direct supervisor.

Documentation of clinical competence will be modeled after ASCP’s official discipline-specific experience documentation required for experiential certification routes (i.e., routes 2 and 4) in microbiology. The maximum allowable clinical contact hour exemption will be 70 hours.
